Artful Journal Weekend

This is how the encaustic finally turned out that I shared a few days ago. I decided to incise a hand over collaged paper and to add texture to the borders. It is definitely done now. The upraised hand is a gesture that symbolises safety. Not that we ever feel safe (our genes have prepared us for danger), but that in fact nature is a closed system and we are safely within its boundaries.

I am scurrying around today filling boxes and boxes with materials to take to Diane's tomorrow in preparation for the two Artful Journal classes I'll be teaching there this Saturday and Sunday. I just received news that one of our students had a death in the family overnight and so there is a spot available for either day if you are in the area. The chapbooks I prepared are shown above and the student packets are shown below.

I still have to drive to 3 locations for the rest of the materials to go into the kits. I figured it was better for one person to burn gasoline than for all of us to shop shop shop for the same items. Thus the boxes and boxes.

My compadre katie will join us for one and maybe both days in class. I am so excited to see her again. It's been 3 months since our last par-tay and that is too long without her warm smile. We have participants coming from neighboring states as well as the Portland area; I am so excited to have a play date with my friends. Pictures to follow next week. We will be up to our elbows in delicious journaling. It is my favorite form of self-expression and prayer.

i am counting the hours too my sweet friend.. :-) we are going to gEt DooOWn!

The chapbooks and student packets look enticing and just scrumptuous - i feel so excited and grateful to be one of the participants in what promises to be a life-altering experience (and no, i'm not exaggerating). thanks for doing all this supply shopping for us - everything is such a distance for me that I really appreciate it. I'll bring my trust new camera and will take lots of class photos for you. mwhaaa xox

Wow Judy, I'd love to come and play, I wish I could 'beam me up scotty' and be transported to your class. Your books and kits look wonderful. I love to see what other people put together for their classes.

OMG, I am so jealous of those people taking a class from you - and the added bonus of the good-vibes from Katie? Heaven!

Hi -- I am excited and getting a bit edgy about the weather. Is anyone coming from the Newport or Corvallis area? I would love a driving companion.

Wish I could come play with you! But hopefully, I'll be making THOUSANDS of dollars at the Women's Fair with my beautiful art! YAY! Love that encaustic--really turned out well! Have fun! Maybe next time I can come!

Rats! Missed out on another class opportunity with the talented Judy! What wonders those class packets seem to hold. I know you and Katie (and all your buddies) will have a great time! Drink a lemon drop for me!

Oh sweet Judy, What a wonderful class yesterday!!! I was so blessed by all the cool stuff you shared and now I know how to do a Journal, Wow!!

And then when I got home and opened my packet of papers you gave up it was like Christmas. So BEAUTIFUL. Now I can see in my hand all the great handmade decorated papers you show in the photo's on your blog.

You are such a great teacher and so much fun!!!

I loved our time talking at lunch. You are such a open and sharing person. You make me proud to be an artist and in your community.

Love and Merry Christmas.

Judy, I know this may be a stupid question, but what is a chapbook? I investigated it online and saw it was used in early publishing days as a way to publish poetry, etc. How is it used in the context of artful journaling?
