Do People Still Read Blogs?

I feel like I've been to the moon; out of touch with you here. Do you still come? Are people not reading blogs as much as they used to? Should I get everyone on an e-mail list and just send out newsletters once a month? I'm thinking about it. The newsletter that is.

I've never done a newsletter before because they sort of felt like junk mail to me but maybe that is a more convenient way (for you, not for me) to keep in touch. Do you have an opinion?

The journal. How I love my hour of meditation each morning in my journal; a time for me to calm my thoughts, write slowly and enjoy my coffee while I transition from sleep to full awareness. While I organize my thoughts and plan my day.

Cy passed this week. He was a shy man from all accounts; he never realized we were good friends. Good-bye beloved friend. I will miss you. You have taught me how to live inside my brush strokes. Like you I am exhausted after a large, successful painting and have to rest to recover. Thank you for that.

We have so many mentors. People who show us what it looks like to be brave, to keep your own counsel above all the opinions and pressures to conform that come from others. How good it is to feel that strength grow within and to join the legion of artists who went their own way.

Violetta is making a spectacle of herself again.

She is buzzing with honeybees. She knows how to attract attention.

My morning stroll. Portland is exquisite today. Not too hot. Good for the flowers.

It's poppy time.

Spider Mum time.

And EncaustiCamp time!!! I'll be teaching a hot palette class next Thursday in Salem, Oregon along with several other teachers and you can still sign up for day classes there. All the information is here; now I have to return to my packing. And flower smelling. And life appreciating. xo

Hmm I don't think newsletters are junk mail but they aren't as much fun as blogs for me to read. The summer months tend to be busy so people may not be coming by as often but I think they still show up.

I still read your blog....checking it from a list every day to see if you have made a new posting. My sister and I share your blog between us, discussing your comments, beautiful pictures, hopes, dreams. We love it! Please don't stop. I need it.

No sweat, I couldn't quit if I tried. It makes me feel alive.

Hi Judy,
I've only just recently found your blog and love the posts. Someone else was asking this recently. Maybe there is a lull in responding generally? I certainly notice less on my own blog.

Please keep posting though. News letters have to be signed up to and aren't as "open" somehow.

Hi Judy, I've been reading your blog for ages but for some reason I've never left a comment...until now! I want you to know that your art and YOU, inspire me. Thanks for showing up here so consistantly!

i check my favorite blogs daily, don't always comment but still love to read what people are doing, teaching, creating, etc. I find blogs so much more personal and friendly like having friends all over the world. Plus blogger has made it hard to comment on some blogs, don't know why but I have had trouble.

I have a long list of blogs I scan every day...but often don't comment. I'm trying to change that. I've been having problems with blogger and for a long time I (and many friends) couldn't comment. Hopefully that is fixed. Also, I agree that summer cuts down on a lot of computer activity...except here in Arizona. My vote is to staw with a blog.

Angie in AZ said...

I have a TON of blogs in my google reader so I do still read them. The only drawback to having things in reader is having to then go directly to the blog to comment. An extra step for us lazies. But, with a reader, I am sure to never miss anything! Don't stop blogging!!!!

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. :(

And in answer to your question, yes, I read. But not sure about newsletters. I never ever read those. I think with many online activities you simply need to keep refreshing your presence online- followers come and go more frequently then the blogger themselves and if your readership becomes stale, no fresh blood, you can be fooled into thinking that because you have/had lots of followers that you still do. When I was active on a certain art website I would go through and check who out of my followers remained active after a few months and most accounts were unused! Which meant even though I had followers no one was really there. I've given up now as it's too much hard work. My mantra is 'people will come if you let them know where you are'. That's all you can do. I hope things pick up for you. Don't leave us though!!

Yes we still read blogs and yes you can do a newsletter but that wouldn't be like reading a blog and I would miss you so much if you stopped posting to your blog.

I read blogs almost daily and you are on my google reader list so I keep up with yours. I don't always have time to comment but I come and read and enjoy. Newsletter, not so much. They seem more promotional where blogs usually seem more personal. Plus, I get too much email to keep up with as it is. Google reader will keep my blog list handy for me until I have time. I like that.

Well, I read all the way through your blog and love the photos. You can't reproduce that stuff as well in a newsletter. I don't get to read as often as I used to (or post on my own) but I guess that's my decision and hopefully I'm doing something nearly as exciting. Cheers to you, Judy. Glad to hear about the encaustic camp. Wish my vacation had coincided.

Amanda said...

I've also been questioning how and why I blog. But in answer to your question, from a reader's perspective, blogs are different from newsletters. I think the more frequent posting serves a very specific purpose. I may not read every word, every time, but sometimes I do, when it's what I need (like today) and I don't think a monthly newsletter would do that.

Bren Graham Thebeau said...

I'm a blog fan myself. Newsletters, well they serve a purpose but I far prefer the unexpectedness of dropping in on my blogging friends. Terrific post and beautiful photos as usual.

Dusty said...

I love your blog! I follow it on Google Reader. It is there when I am ready. A newsletter would just drift down to the bottom of my inbox before I had the chance to give it my full attention.

I love reading blogs. Newsletters...they're more for getting info about classes etc. Your blog is beautiful and I try to stop by regularly.

Lynn Cohen said...

I am still reading others blogs, including yours...but was away for two weeks home a week then gone another five days so because of that I did not visit blogs.
I also wonder as I sit here typing if I should/could be drawing or sewing on something...am I putting off being creative? Or is my blog part of my being creative? I sure know it is a huge part of why I became creative in the first place; and how I stay inspired and motivated. And not least of all how I love the feedback I get on mine about what I am creating or just doing. So I don't want a news letter please; I want to SEE your art, your journal pages, your flowers and foods, and even your personal life pieces you choose to share from time to time. It's like catching up with a good friend.
Am I kidding myself about that? Maybe, but in this mielu it is a friendship that has grown because we share this way.

Perhaps I'll do it less often as every day to make sure I have time to actually create. But I won't stop all together. And I hope you don't either.

I'm comment #57 so you see... people still read blogs! I read yours, every post, but I don't always leave a comment. I'm not much of a 'newsletter' reader... I am here! I am reading. Every post. I think what is different is that I "scan" several blogs everyday and (bad me) I don't comment as often as I used to. I use Google Reader to collect my blogs for my review and it is a couple extra steps to get to where I can leave a comment. To save time I review. I respond if asked to respond to something (like this) or if something really moves me in some way, I respond.

I don't comment unless I have something to say. My own blog shows many readers but few comments. That's just the way it is. I guess.

Hey Judy! It must be in the air or something because I just posted on this subject: http://con-tain-it.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/07/overwhelmed-with-blogging.html

My advise...stick to blogging and skip the newsletter...it's alot more work than it is worth and you won't get any more responses or comments. I've been blogging for 4 years and don't plan on quitting any time soon. I read your blog and every post through my google reader. I try to comment when I have time but mainly I leave comments on those blogs of the bloggers who visit and comment on my blog first. It's just how I was raised...lol...ya know with good manners. Something that technology has eliminated these days. My kids have more gadgts at their disposal and I hear from them even less...sign of the times I'm sure. Hope this helps, fondly, Roberta

I love to read my favorite blogs, I love my mornings catching up with the daily and or weekly goings on in the worlds of others, the sharing of artwork, information, delights from home and studio, from travels far and not so far, from failures and successes, from knowing others have struggles and triumphs. This all matters to me, the world is a smaller place with blogs, I'd never meet all of you out there if it depended on my budget or the ability to travel which is out of the question. I can be where I need to be, where I have to be and still find kindred spirits out there, see and be excited by the words and photos of others. I STILL LOVE to read blogs and newsletters I get those too but they don't thrill me as much. IT's kind of like the family letter at Christmas, blogs feel personal at least to me, newsletters feel like it's me and a 'thousand' others and even tho those same thousand others might be looking at the same page at the same time but it's different. Keep bloggin cuz I'll sure keep visiting.

One should only blog if one wants to, but if you ask me yours is one of my favorites because I love peeking into your journal, your life and your studio! A newsletter to me is more business - for classes, paintings and things you want to sell, so I can do without that but as an artist you might want to cultivate a newsletter/mailinglist and collect addresses for it. But
I'll find that on favorite blogs from time to time and will search it out when I need it.

BJ Lantz said...

Sistah Judy ~ I don't know about others and their blog reading habits but I could spend all day long, every day, exploring the thousands upon thousands of fascinating art lives that exist out there. But, in doing so, I would miss my own fascinating art life :-)

So, for me blog reading has become a when-I-need-a-little-break activity. And even then, I limit how much time I can spend, mostly visiting my favorites (like you :-) ~ so little time to keep up with it all and ourselves as well. I know my own poor blog has suffered.

As for newsletters, I've signed up for them, then unsubscribed...they pileup in my inbox, waiting for me to find or make the time to spend with them and just their being there is a little bit of a stress ~ like an unfinished to-do. Much easier to just visit when I have the time and am in the right frame of mind.

I don't always comment unless I feel I have something to say ~ as is the case here. So perhaps others are like myself and just because we're not commenting doesn't mean we're not here :-)

So the answer is yes, yes I read still read blogs. Oh, and I am with you on the morning journaling. I have been a sporadic journaler my whole life, but for the past year I have kept up this morning practice and look forward to it each day and am a little bent out of shape if something interferes :-)

XO , Sistah ~ how I wish ~ oh how I wish I were coming to Encausticamp!!!!!!! I've been playing with beeswax lately and I am hooked.

You obviously are a great mentor to many of us- don't go away. A newsletter is so much like an advertisement, but your blog feels like a personal peek into the life of a friend. I've neglected to thank you for some time now, but it's not for lack of appreciation- I just assume you know how much you are loved. And I should know better (the mother of four)...You are a most unique voice in this blog chorus; a song of inspiration that would be sorely missed. Whatever you decide to do, thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your sweet soul.

I will add my name to the huge list. I love to read your blog but don't often comment. You have such a great blog voice with lots of rich imagery, news, inspiration and fun ideas to keep us coming back for more. :))

Keep on blogging!!!

My guess is . . . yes. And I prefer blogs to newsletters, for what it's worth.

I still read blogs but now there are so many I like that I find myself sometimes falling very far behind.

Sometimes I don't think anyone is reading my blog but I check my stats and find out they are - they just don't talk back much.

And that reminds me to comment when I do read.

I love your blog and I'm hoping to take your class this fall
