Slumber Party Part Deux

So here are my exquisite corpses. First a close-up of the face on one painted over glued patches of fabric. I had a lot of trouble at first with the free motion quilting attachment and finally broke it trying to figure out how to make it work. The terrific people where I got it allowed me to trade it in for one that worked better on my machine. (Thank you Montavilla Sewing Center.)

This is what the attachment looks like. There are many different kinds. The one I broke cost $29 while this replacement only cost $9. It works great.

This is the entire hanging. My stitching is not well controlled yet but I'm improving.

This is a detail of the 2nd one.

And the entire piece. Painted on lightweight canvas. I love painting "skins"; what I call unstretched canvas or fabric. And now adding stitching is a 2nd way to play around. My friends have all done this a lot but it is a new one for me - now let's see what else I can sew on!

  1. I'd say your free motion sewing looks devine. It's your style my friend; and don't worry so much about "control"; relax and let your subconsious take you there and all will be fine. These look terrific. Hugs!!!! Happy to see you enjoying sewing art!

  5. I don't know how your stitching could be any more perfect. I don't think it is suppose to be. I love free motion stitching and have you noticed that you can really get into the "zone" while doing it? It is something about the level of concentration and your mind staying several stitches ahead of that dancing needle. Love both pieces but extralove(my new word) the first one.

  7. I can get a bit addicted to free machinery, my motto being 'drop your feed dogs, foot down and let your needle do the drawing'! I'm no expert, but you look well on your way, you just have to let your mind go free - and relax those shoulders.

  10. Cheryl, to answer your question, we set a timer for 7 minutes and then pass the painting around the table for each to change, add, complete.

  11. Wow, Judy, this looks great and I'm totally inspired. Must get my machine out. I've always loved thread added to canvases.

Do you paint the canvas first - I think you probably do? Maybe I've missed a post where you've explained more about this.

And I think your free motion sewing looks terrific.

  12. hi sam - yes I do paint the canvas first. keep the layers thin so your needle can punch through them pretty easily.

  13. Thanks for the tip, Judy.

The second one in particular makes me think of Chagall's paintings - lovely lovely stuff.

(p.s. I ordered Plaster of Paris and Beeswax today... getting very excited now!)
