Decided to make a new journal like the ones we are going to make at Squam. I keep discovering new things to make the construction faster and easier and I wanted to time myself so I'd know how long things took to dry and so on. I've really got it down to an art now, quick and easy which will allow us time to do some page entries. This is the class the students asked for last year so I've followed their wishes and there's still room in the class if you'd like to join us. I'll show you more photos of the finished journal at the end of the post.
But first! Last Saturday John and I went to Newport, Oregon to deliver paintings to Earthworks Gallery. We noticed a fisherman selling fresh line caught albacore off his boat so we purchased a couple.
Here the guys are filleting our tuna right on the boat. They have to go out one hundred miles to find the tuna.
While we were there we had a gander at the sealions. They make the most wonderful honking noises and are very ill-tempered with each other.
When we got home we called the kids over for an impromptu blackened cajun tuna feed. Which required a trip to the garden for side dishes.
Plump arugula.
Peaches.
For peach crisp. (I added the topping after taking the photo.)
Vegetables and summer savory.
Cooking on the camp stove. Beer on a hot day. And my girls did all the dishes. Happy, lucky me.
Okay, so here's the finished front cover. I was in the mood for lavish color and a rising spirit.
The inside front cover. Collaged in part of a print from an old painting to remind myself to keep asking what makes me happy and to keep on keeping those things in my life.
Inside back cover
Front and back view and the spine.
I love making books. Love love love it.
xo
The first book I ever made was done using your tutorial ... paper grocery bag books. I still love that look! Rugged ... sturdy ...
ReplyDeleteBy the way what type of paper is in this journal? I am trying to branch out, but don't have a clue (or a place to feel the paper) about paper!
judy, the fish looks delish! as do the veggies, but the most delightful treats are those happy girls on the covers of your book. thanks for showing us! lyle
ReplyDeletejust amazing!! i LOVE your work so much and to be honest love you!

ReplyDeleteEverything I love - summer, fresh fish, home grown veg, family and a beautiful new journal! Our summer has vanished here, typical British weather, but lovely to share your sunshine.
ReplyDelete(never heard of arugula - off to look that up, aah that is because we call it rocket, and yes I have some growing)
Judy everything looks So good! Love the fresh from the garden vegetables, our garden never amounted to anything this year due to the heat and drought so I am living vicariously through yours! My husband is a commercial fisherman and blackened tuna is one of the best sellers in our restaurant too! As for the journal it's beautiful! I keep hoping to see you in the Hampton A&S lineup each year! Maybe one day? Hugs, Laura

Yummmmmy !
ReplyDeleteThe book is delicious too. So wish that Squam was in the picture for me this year but alas, no. The play date we had last year was one of the funnest days I have had in my arty life ! Lucky are those who will get to hang with you and make juicy books this year. I like to hope our time will come again...
Big Love, Beautiful Beautiful Judy.
Everything in this post is delicious even the book! I just bought two used books on how to make books!!! Your painted covers are fantabulous!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing what makes you happy!!!! Have fun at Squam.
Your book journal covers and side is absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou make me miss OR!
I love your journal! Gorgeous! I wish I could take the class, but have already committed to the encaustic class in Portland in Oct. Will you be teaching in Wisconsin (Valley Ridge) in the future?
ReplyDeleteMy Dad is a commercial fisherman off the West Coast of Vancouver Island. It has been a few years since I have been out with him, so seeing your fishing photos is very nostalgic for me. Is that pen the Sea Lions are in, a trap of some sort? I have never seen that before. Looks like they are quite numerous there and may have become a problem. I was thinking maybe they collect them in that cage and then drag the cage to another location to set them free. Only a guess, but it does seem like a reasonable one.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous book! You are a true artist and it sure comes through in your work. Pure beauty!
Loe this journal... are they both mermaids?? So appropriate for the last weeks of summer... thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove not loe
ReplyDeleteahhhh, judy! this cover! this book! whoo!!!
ReplyDeletebeautiful august days to you!
xo
To answer Cindy's question about the Sea Lion cage: those are all animals that have been injured by fishing lines or boat propellers; shocking and sad. They are there to heal and rest (and be fed) and are free to go at any time.
ReplyDeleteYour artwork is absolutely wonderful. I love it. Newport, Oregon......I can't tell you how many times we went out on the Kingfisher from there, bought fresh fish, etc. And I can't count the number of trips I made there to buy caramel corn and fresh taffy.....oh dear me. Thanks for sharing the photos. My parents bought a place in Lincoln City in the 60's and retired there in 1984. Lots of fun times at the coast.
ReplyDeleteJudy, this cover is so pretty. I love the shell! The texture is great. Have you had albacore sashimi? OH, it's so good. I ask for it everywhere. At IHOP they thought I was crazy, but it's not like I'm not used to that!
ReplyDeleteI love that you time yourself. HA! I would love to learn from you how to make a journal. Unfortunately, I leave two weeks after your class, so I can't do both! But I'm keeping this in mind for next year.
I can tell you do love your books and it shows. They are all creative and inventive.
ReplyDeleteIt must be wonderful to live near the ocean. I do love my mountains but there is nothing, nothing like the smell of the sea. The tuna must have been fabulous.
LOVE your journal cover!! and yum on the tuna!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great journal! Did you make the actual journal?
ReplyDeleteThe FOOD!! Incredible. And the colors, Mom Nature does it best.
You and John always have the best adventures and family dinners. The Goddess journal covers are delicious. Were the Taras inspiration or perhaps, another Warrior Goddess? Also, if you haven't seen the film, The Secret of Roan Irish is a wonderful tale about the legend of the selkie. I am always reminded of their legend when I see sea lions. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteyour dinner looks so good, i like your journal cover
ReplyDeleteHello. I have just found your blog. I really enjoyed reading it, I will be back. Great art! I am an Art Therapist and my blog is Art Therapy reflections if you want to visit. Warmly, Karen
ReplyDeleteOh, my, those peaches look amazing!
ReplyDeleteJudy! I came to your blog to finally leave a comment because when I read your blog from my ipod touch it hasn't been letting me post comments. And then you had this posted! It made me even more excited about SAW because I am (of course) in your journal-making class.
ReplyDeleteAll of your summer adventures and food have looked so wonderful and I have been so blessed by the spirit of your posting. So glad you are feeling better and are as creative as ever (and willing to spread it!). Lots of love and see you soon!
Jess
Wow what a cover and the insides are fabulous too. This has so much energy happening, I think you're back in the land of colour. It must be all of that delicious home grown fare.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE making books... (I don't even count them anymore) and smell them and alter them and buy them and fill them up and - well - read them and, and... I just keep on going. As you do, dear... keep on rockin'!
ReplyDeleteYou must live in the Pacific Northwest. Love, love Newport. Now I must go looking for fish. Your journal is beautiful too. I must visit the gallery after looking for fish.
ReplyDeletea feast for the eyes, and the tummy :) I love your new journal - so bold and brilliant!
