I've been sketching with pen (Sarasa black that makes gray when you get it wet) and sumi ink.
I got out my high school annual for these little guys. I copy them by turning the book upside down. Then I don't know what they're supposed to look like and that helps my brain see what's actually there. The photos are tiny and poorly lit. In a strange way that helps.
Once in awhile I copy a face that I find on the internet. I don't know who this guy is so I make up a name and back story as he emerges. "Rupert" was married to my first grade teacher Mrs. McPherson. She was a real person. I decided that he looks like a music teacher.
I don't know what to say about this other than that drawing was my first love as a child and that from time to time I want to play in line. And to thank Mary Ann for this new affliction.

I first fell in love with this style of drawing when I 'met' Danny Gregory. He often copied from old year books, too. It's a great way of getting used to the basic dimensions, and infinite variations, of the human face. Lovely work here!

ReplyDeleteYes, I like to draw with a pen (no erasing). If I get something in the drawing not quite right I go with it. Love the idea of using old year books. I'll have to take a peek at the ones I have. Your pages are great and it's true that working in an art journal is like meditation. (Think I'll go there now...)

Judy! I reread the recipe for cold wax and realized I only put in one cup of the wax to 1 1/4 cup Gamsol. What should I do? The texture is soft, but maybe too soft. What should I try? Heat this gently back up and add the rest of the wax? thanks, jeanne
ReplyDeleteI love drawing and am back to working from a live model. I spent so much time drawing in 4th grade, that the teacher threatened me and said I wouldn't make it into 5th grade if I didn't stop drawing all my classmates and finish my math workbook.

ReplyDeleteJudy, I almost NEVER comment on blogs...but I must this time! "Rupert" looks SO MUCH like our music teacher from 1955-1965 at our school in California! His name was Leon Guide! WOW...this knocked my socks off! :)
