Hey, well, no posts for a week and then two in one day; it's feast or famine around here. I've been making dolls again.
I admit that posting the photos of student work inspired me to get out the clay. That and the fact that it's the first moment I've had in the studio. I hardly knew where to start with so many ideas twirling around vying for attention. Finally I settled down though and made a body for the demo head I started in the class at Art & Soul.
I've named her Bianca and she is very special to me. With chenille from a student (thanks Chris!) I fashioned white polka dots for her. With me it's either dots or stripes. In this case dots.
And then along came this one which I have named Green for my own reasons. It's Green's Birthday in a day or two and so she and Bianca are going to go to their favorite Thai restaurant and then eat ice cream afterward. They like to do that.
Green is a warrior; very strong and brave. She has known Bianca for many years and Bianca admires her.
I was going to give her a superhero cape but Green shrugged it off and settled for the helmet instead.
Bianca is more of a conformist than Green is; she likes to hide in sheep's clothing.
She is loving Oregon's mild weather so far this autumn and even heard tree frogs croaking outside. She plans on staying cozy this winter in her fuzzy coat of wool. Chenille. Whatever.
I think I'm in love with Bianca...those eyes!
ReplyDeletei don't know how it could be possible, but i do believe these girls are my favorites yet. you are going to cause me to have to drag out my sculpey yet! 'miss hollering with you, sweet girl. glad to know you are well. i hope autumn soothes you and that the gray doesn't get you down. hugs and hugs!!
ReplyDeleteThese are WONDERFUL! LOVE Bianca, especially... it's the sheep body that just gets me. Cute story too. These make me want to play with clay.... like I need one more thing to do and another obsession. Gee, thanks Judy.
ReplyDeleteBianca is wonderful !!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been shy of using sculpy and gravitate towards paper clay.
You've creating some fun characters here.
Inspirational as usual. I will have to get out the clay, I guess. I've been using paper clay and need to get going on doing more art. Talk, talk, talk. That's me!
ReplyDeletei think Green and I wear the same size bra. I admire her decision to abandon a cape in favor of a more sensible helmet. Bianca can come by for tea any day, then graze in my yard. She's certainly cute, but Green and I are going to burn our bras then gallop off and find a nice adventure to sink our teeth into.
ReplyDeleteJudy - these are wonderful! You almost inspire me to try doll-making .. . hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteOh Judy, you never cease to amaze me! I love these two creations you have made. They are so unique! Thank you for sharing and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteyou've definately found your groove again, judy - these little people are fabulous and oh such interesting stories. i'm in love, love, love...happy belated birthday, green!! can't wait to see you in just a few days now. xo
ReplyDeleteOh, they are soooo good. I love them so much!
ReplyDeleteIs that the ultimate fun couple or what??!!! Adore them both! I feel a Sculpey weekend coming on... Thanks for the shot of inspiration! :)deb/debbie/debra
ReplyDeleteBianca puts me in mind of Katie Kendrick & her new felted hat...
ReplyDeletelove these judy!
ReplyDeletei think i've asked you this before, but can't remember....does sculpey take to encaustic at all? I am still wanting to do some figurative work with clay + encaustic....but going to a ceramics studio, plus firing there, is such a time investment (that I don't have!) that I doubt I will ever be able to pursue it. sculpey seems more managable. But maybe not. hmmm.
I love Bianca and Green. I'd love to see their story continued in a little book. I think they'd make fascinating stars in a children's story.
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing! They have such sweet personalities.
ReplyDeleteLove the sculpy dolls and can't wait for A&S Las Vegas. You're not making it any easier!! thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI just love these, Judy! Especially Bianca.... I hope that I'll have the chance to make something like her at ArtUnraveled..... I do hope that you will be teaching there :)
ReplyDeleteThese new creatures/dolls are are just wonderful...love their little stories too!
ReplyDeleteJacky
I agree with Kelly - I think I have my favorites, and then you make more! So beautiful, Judy - thank you so much for sharing them with us.
ReplyDeleteThey're a riot! I love them and their story.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should get out my large stash of Sculpey and, and... and look at it, remember the many, many beads I made with it and that now sit in a container somewhere, and put it back into hibernation.
These are amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou inspire the play out of me, Teacher Lady ! These dolls are so awesome ! I love their funny little faces and their silly costumes. The best part about them is their stories. I love how you have given them tales to tell, just like each one of us has inside of us. Happy Birthday, Green, and hugs to you, your friends and your maker !
ReplyDeleteThese are just the greatest!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly gives me the inspiration to get back into creating figures again!
So many cool things to look at!
Thanks for showing..
Hugs, Darlene
Oh my goodness i love them all and I can't wait to do your class when you come to Australia.
ReplyDeleteThese dolls are awesome Judy.
They are both lovely! What type of clay did you use? You make me want to try making a doll too :-)
ReplyDeleteI like Green, but I absolutely love Bianca. She is so unique and adorable. I love the little white puffs on her little sheep body. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! My friend Jacky told me about your dolls and I just had to visit. I adore them - they are so much fun. And I adore Bianca.
ReplyDeleteMmm...think I might need to get some clay out and have a play.
Dot :)
I love the "doll community"!!
ReplyDeleteYour work is beautiful, moving... both folksy AND surreal.
