Red

This is my encaustic for the month of February. Our theme is "red". It was ridiculously simple to execute after I scraped off the wax from the previous try (not the mandala, the previous try at "red"). The sun has been shining for 2 days in a row here; this is the first sun we've seen in months and it's all I can do not to stand at my window with my face turned stupidly up at the sky. I feel like a flower myself on a very long stem stretching toward the source.

  1. It somehow seems to me there are many artists in that part of the world, where the sun does not shine so often, I think I would go mad at the somberness of the climate, but then when the sun does shine, it probably is much brighter and fulling then where the sun shines with more frequency. I love your encaustic...though I had to look up the word.

lately your encaustic layers seem so warm and thick. layers of waxy honey. seems like such a pleasing medium when it is cold for days on end. I dream of long stretches of cold and grey. i remember how good the sun would feel on those days. before the drought came.

You may be standing at your window with your "face turned stupidly up at the sky," but that's what I've been doing for the last two nights. There's nothing more wonderful than going to bed by the light of a full moon, and then waking up with the same. It makes me want to stay up all night! I love the sunshine, too, but right now it's the moon I love best. Oh, yes, and I love your new encaustic, too! :-)

  4. Madam, I would willingly send thee a thousand of Phoenix's suns, especially during June, July and August ... are you also in need of sun during those months? I don't know where exactly in the 'Pacific Northwest' is home to you, but really that's self-explanatory. I have family in Seattle whose letters and emails sound very like some of your blog entries!

Your encaustic flower is charmingly simple & fresh! I look at it and I want to be like Maria in the beginning of the Sound of Music, doing 'the hills are alive' twirling dance.

  8. We always long for what we haven't got! I was raised in Cleveland Ohio and I've gotta tell 'ya I love the cloudy, rainy, cool times in So Cal. Too much sunshine makes me nervous.
What rich piece Red is. I feel like I could step into it.

Stop by my blog. I have something there for you.
