This is the weird painting I told you about a couple of blogs ago. I named it "She Who Watches" and the house in it is modelled after the one we used to live in in the little township of Orenco. It is a huge painting (for me), 30x40" on a deep stretched canvas. I dont know what kind of an artist I am. This one would be frowned upon by my art school professors. Hugely frowned upon. It is not 'arty'. It is illustrationy. Literal. One of my art teachers once said I was 'flat footed'. He was wrong. I have high, lovely arches.
I was browsing through an old journal and found 3 pages almost good enough to share. Doodle doodle doodle. The elephant above was drawn with a dip pen and that rubber stuff you use under watercolors and then remove to reveal the white paper. We didn't have those cool uni-ball signos back in the olden days.
I've always loved houses, arches, grottos and caves. I must have been thinking of something greek with columns for the page above.
And this one is just a quick watercolor sketch over a water soluable pen line. I used to do tons of these. I love the way the water makes the line go all mooshy and grays the color. Have I mentioned that for 7 years I painted in nothing but transparent watercolor? That was when Carole Smith published greeting cards of my work. I think she printed 92 designs plus some calendars in the early 90's and then distributed them all over the world. That was kewl. She's sold that business now though. People e-mail and dont buy as many cards as they used to.
Yesterday I went to the second hand store in my little town to buy some puzzles and board books to paint on and I found this treasure for only four dollars! It's my groovy dye kit that I'm going to use to overdye woolen remnants for rug hooking. I'm still designing my first project and have yet to locate a hook (sadly, I cannot find one that I had back in college when I was teaching rug hooking in Arizona) but I am laying the groundwork for a project to work on during the shows this summer.Lastly, I want to let you know that when you comment on my blog I get your comments in my e-mail but with no return addresses. This is a change for blogger I think. I'm pretty sure I used to get an address with the comment and then I always responded to the comments. So please dont think I take your comments for granted. (Anyone who has their own blog knows that this is not the case. We live for the comments!!)
Back to the studio.
