What's In the Studio

The title should be what’s not in the studio as I am leaving momentarily to ship this painting off to its new owner. It is a reverse painting on acrylic panel and I shot pictures of it after I’d completed the drawing (on the reverse side of the acrylic panel remember so it is backward) and then after the painting was completed and in the frame.

It it a diptych measuring 24x60”. My approach is to do a drawing directly on the acrylic with water soluble pencil and then to paint over that with acrylic paint and acrylic medium solutions. What makes the painting so luminous is the contrast between the opaque passages and the transparent ones. I always leave lots of whites for sparkle, as in the white daisies and in the gaps of paint. I work in layers and without checking my results. I have done so many of these paintings now that I pretty much can tell what is going on without looking.

The last thing I do after the painting is totally dry is to back the painting with a sheet of mat board and tape the edges to keep the mats pristine. Then the painting is ready for its frame or in this case its frames.

I will throw in a reverse painting of a dog I did too just because the dog people always ask me why I paint so many cats. The truth is I find most animals more lovable than some people (read politicians) and I dont have a favorite between cats and dogs. So this is Moe.
